What is a contextual advertisement?

A contextual advertisement is an advertisement that is related to the topic of the content where it is placed.

Example of a contextual advertisement

If you are browsing a surfing blog, for example, an automated advertising service (such as AdSense), will recognise the context of the page and serve you a surfing-related ad over something else entirely unrelated. contextual advertisement example

In the above example the contextual advertisement is in green in the right-hand sidebar. The idea is that you will be far more likely to make a purchase as you have already shown that you're interested in the product.
