What is link spam?

Link spam refers to any links between pages that are for the sole purpose of increasing the pages fortunes in the search engine rankings for certain search terms.

Link spam often comes from link farms and often includes the overuse of optimised anchor text using the keyword term or terms the page is intended to rank for. Link spam does not tend to offer the end user any value at all.
