What is a sitemap?

A sitemap is an ordered list of pages on a website that's accessible to crawlers or users to browse.

XML Sitemaps

A sitemap for the crawlers is usually in the xml format and shows which pages are available to crawl, which have been updated and which are new. You can see examples and even generate your own at sitemaps.org.

Human readable sitemaps

A sitemap for users is usually a long list of links to the main pages of the different sections of the website, for example, this page from the guardian:  https://www.theguardian.com/index/sitemap/0,3109,189561,00.html
